Which basic building blocks is the ribosome made of? / Vad är ribosomen huvudsakligen uppbyggd av?
Answer
It is made of rRNA and proteins. rRNA is in the center of both the large subunit and the small subunit. The proteins are more in the periphery.
As described the ribosome has a large and a small subunit. In prokaryotes the small subunit is 30S and the large is 50S – they together form the 70S ribosome. In eukaryotes the ribosome is a bigger, the small subunit is 40S and the bigger is 60S – they form the 80S ribosome.
The small subunits is where the t-RNA´s anticodon pairs with the codon on the RNA strand, in the large subunit the peptide-bond is formed.
